After reviewing options for a traditional calendar or two extended learning plans that add 10 days to the 2020-2021 school year, 14 elementary schools and one alternative high school in Albuquerque Public Schools voted for the longer school year.

APS schools got to choose their 2020-2021 calendars after reviewing the options through their Instructional Councils, parent organizations, staff meetings, and community meetings. During the review process, school communities were asked to consider how they would use the 10 extra days to improve educational outcomes. They looked at remediation and enrichment, innovation, co-curricular activities, community partnerships, and more.

Staff and families then voted. Final decisions were due to the district by Feb. 12.

New Futures High School, which added 10 instructional days this school year, voted to return to a traditional calendar in 2020-2021.

APS began looking at lengthening the school year for some of its schools after the state made funding available for an Extended Learning Time Program last spring. Research shows that more time in the classroom can boost student achievement and help students retain more of what they learn over the summer. Also, more time in school means more access to resources including hot meals, counselors, nurses, social and community services.
